Consider this: A Book: A Christian's Necessary Food

READ EXODUS 3-6. BOOK: A CHRISTIAN’S NECESSARY FOOD. "The greatest work that any of us can do for one another, whether young or old, is to teach the soul to draw its water from the wells of God."
This quote from F. B. Meyer describes the effort made during a prayer seminar to encourage believers to get into the Word of God themselves. Not only is the seminar built on biblical principles, participants are challenged to incorporate daily Bible reading as an integral part of their Quiet Time. Dwight Moody observed that he had never known a useful Christian who ignored the Word of God. It is my firm belief that a believer will never become a prayer warrior apart from the Word of God.
My life changed dramatically in 1977 when I learned to get into the Word of God on a daily basis for my own food. Prior to that time—since I began my pastoral ministry in 1953—I was only in the Bible to get a message to preach. Since then, I have read the Bible through each year beginning in Genesis and ending in Revelation. By reading three chapters a day and five on Sunday, a believer can complete the reading in a year. I have learned to read with a pen or pencil in hand. There is value in underlining a word or a phrase and making notes in a new study Bible each year. Further, I have practiced making a page of notes out of my reading every day. Whereas, I spent years struggling each week to get a message to preach, I now have more to share than there is time to share it.
For several years, my prayer time has started with praise and worship based on my day's reading. As I see God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit revealed in the Scriptures, I
praise God for who He is. My praise never becomes stale because the beauty of the Lord shines through. My dream is that you will find the studies valuable in drawing your own water from the wells of God and that you will, in turn, encourage others to read the Bible for their food.

BRING THE BOOKS -PART ONE - RESOURCES AVAILABLE

READ EXODUS 1-2.  From his prison cell in Rome, Paul wrote to Timothy, his young comrade, in what was his last epistle. As he closed his letter (2 Timothy 4:9-18), he explained his situation and urged Timothy to be diligent to come quickly (v 9). He asked him to bring Mark (v 11), his coat, and his books (v 13).
In the early nineties, the Lord impressed upon me the importance of reducing the key truths & insights that He was teaching me to writing to help His children in their daily walk with Him. The result was a series of books that were written to flesh out what I was teaching in the six-hour prayer seminar. The books cover a wide area of the Christian life.
The print ministry provides an opportunity for individuals to study on their own or in small groups—either as review or to further their knowledge and understanding of the essentials of the Christian faith: Bible study, prayer, witnessing, stewardship, and walking in the Spirit as a lifestyle. I have generally used a twelve-study format that lends itself to systematic study for either an individual or a small group. During 2002, study groups (Sunday school classes, Bible study groups) have used several of the books as guides for study.
From the beginning, our policy has been not to sell materials, but to depend upon contributions. Most people make contributions, but there are some who either do not, or cannot, make a contribution. This policy has worked and has given us an opportunity to share with many folks.
In order to provide the materials, we need help. The suggested contribution to cover printing and shipping is included in the list that follows.
Books:
1. A Christian's Necessary Food. Twelve in-depth studies on how to study the Bible profitably. ($10)
2. Adoration: Prayer as Worship. Twelve in-depth studies on various aspects of praise and worship in prayer. ($10).
3. The Enabler. Thorough study on the Holy Spirit, including how to be Spirit-filled. ($10)
4. Hey! I’m Saved! Designed to help a new believer to get started right, the content deals with ten key areas. Why not get one for each Christian in your family? ($3)
5. Intercession: Prayer as Work. Twelve in-depth studies on how to engage in intercession as a prayer warrior. ($10)
6. The Model Prayer. An in-depth study of the pattern provided by Jesus, Himself, on how to pray. A must for the serious student of prayer. ($10)
7. Notes from My Bible 2nd Editon. 1,000 pithy sayings on the Christian life, favorite poems, tributes to Dad Henry and Mom Troutman. ($10)
8. Spiritual Warfare. Provides biblical information on our enemy, the nature of the warfare, and God’s provision for our protection and victory. ($10)
9. Upper Room Discourse. Fifteen studies to help a believer master John 13-14-15-16-17, a key section of Scripture in which Jesus’ gives final instructions to His disciples just hours before His crucifixion. Excellent to help in understanding the place of prayer and the Holy Spirit in one’s life. ($10)
10. Prayer Seminar Workbook. The basic teaching tool for the prayer seminar ministry. ($6).
11. Prayer Seminar Workbook. An expanded edition (79 pages) that includes content beyond what is taught in a prayer seminar. ($10).

How important is it to have such materials to use with your Bible study? Charles Spurgeon encouraged his preacher boys to build a good library even if they had to go hungry! Often God has inspired authors to share in ways that provide deeper insight into areas being studied

SPIRITUAL INSIGHT FROM MARTIN LUTHER

READ GENESIS 48-50.  “He who believes in God is not careful for the morrow, but labors joyfully and with a great heart. 'For He giveth His beloved, as in sleep.' He must work and watch, yet never be careful or anxious, but commit all to Him, and live in serene tranquility, with a quiet heart, as one who sleeps safely and quietly.”
One of the Notes from My Bible is a good reminder to one and all. “Outside of the will of God, there can be no success; in the will of God there is no such thing as failure.” Without question, the will of God is for His children to heed His written Word and pray about everything.

CONSIDER THIS: YOUR PERSONAL PRAYING: PART FOUR.

READ GENESIS 45-47. That morning hour in the Word of God listening to Him speaking to your heart and then speaking your heart to Him can be the best part of your day. “And in the morning rising up a great while before day, [Jesus] went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (Mark 1:35). One would think that He did not need prayer. But here is the record. Long before dawn He withdrew to be alone with His Father in prayer. How great then is our need of prayer. Martin Luther, during his tremendous schedule of preaching, writing, and contenting for the truth, said, “I cannot get on without three hours of prayer every day.” Think what that would do for us. Think what it would do for the churches. Until there are praying people, there will never be praying churches. He who cannot pray when the sun rises does not know how to pray when the clouds come.

CONSIDER THIS: YOUR PERSONAL PRAYING: PART THREE

READ GENESIS 41-44.  For the past three decades and more, my time for the Word and Prayer is early morning. My goal for many years was to be in bed and asleep by 9 p.m. Never use an alarm clock. “Father, when my body is rested, wake me up and I will have time with You.” For me, that is usually 4 a.m. If God is not first in our thoughts in the morning, He will be last in our thoughts all day. I am not mandating that everyone follow this schedule, but I am reminding you to make a practice to begin your day with God.
There are three reasons why I believe in EARLY MORNING PRAYING: 1) THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS. He got up a great while before day” to pray (Mark 1:35). It appears that the watch of the night Jesus used was 3-6 a.m. That’s early morning praying. Remember: PRIORITY. DISCIPLINE. ∫2) Jesus called for early morning praying in The Model Prayer. This truth is packaged in these words: “pray for daily bread.” If you wait until night to pray this, you could have gone hungry all day. 3) SUMMARY PRINCIPLE: GET GOD IN ON YOUR PRAYING. DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU’VE MESSED UP YOUR DAY AND THEN BRING THE PIECES FOR HIM TO PUT BACK TOGETHER.

Most of the content of the prayer seminar are things a believer already knows. As points are made the Holy Spirit brings them alive and makes them useful to the participants in a seminar. Here is what one of Liberty University graduates said following an all-day prayer seminar in his church:

“I knew that!” is an often repeated phrase today, and for many a pastor in the prayer seminar, it could be phrased, “I taught that!” So often, however, is that “other voice” that is heard. Dr. Henry is just such a voice bringing a seminar on prayer that refreshes and revitalizes the weary heart with long-known truths and fresh, exhilarating insights. Our one day with Dr. Henry has changed the prayer lives of our people as God’s Word was used to challenge, uplift, exhort, and instruct. Any one of us would do well to give more time to prayer; any church would do well to give one day to prayer with Dr. Henry. George A. Garancosky, Jr., Pastor, Faith Baptist Church, Beaver Springs PA

CONSIDER THIS: BRING FRESHNESS TO YOUR QUIET HOUR

READ GENESIS 37-40. How is your personal praying (just between you and God) coming along? Most Christians are carnal Christians. Several years ago, I was invited to participate in a commencement service in a seminary in Indiana. One of the leading Southern Baptist evangelists was invited to bring the main address. Since I had never heard him speak, I was quite alert to receive his message. As was my custom, I took notes as I listened. It was not long that I ceased note sensing something missing in his presentation. Frankly I was quite disappointed in what I was hearing at a very exciting moment in the lives of these graduates. The speaker made no allowance for carnal Christians, true believers living with self in control, not the Holy Spirit. The fact is that there are carnal Christians who will one day have a home in Heaven. I have often stated in a prayer seminar, “Show me 100 Christians and I will show you at least ninety-five, perhaps more, carnal Christians. Consequently most Christians do not have a meaningful consistent prayer life. There will be little interest in spiritual food from the Word of God. Resolve to embrace biblical truths related to getting on praying ground.

CONSIDER THIS: YOUR PERSONAL PRAYING: PART ONE

READ GENESIS 32-36. CONSIDER THIS: YOUR PERSONAL PRAYING: PART ONE. One goal that guided the development of the PRAYER SEMINAR WORKBOOK was to provide some practical suggestions in writing for my students, applicable to the “then” and “there” for one’s spiritual life. Then during the prayer seminar itself to flesh out the points made. Thousands have been given the opportunity at the close of a prayer seminar to write what God had done for them during the seminar and what they were going to do with what they learned. Many of these, including pastors, commented upon how practical the teaching was and how their prayer lives had been enriched.

Session Seven in the Prayer Seminar is filled with practical suggestions. PRIORITY AND DISCIPLINE are two building foundational blocks. The need to understand the IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER is basic. God wants us to pray. Two guiding Biblical principles in the School of Prayer are as follows:

#1. ESTABLISH A TIME TO MEET THE LORD. Make an appointment with God and keep the appointment. Begin by devoting a few minutes a day for prayer. As these moments are blessed, it will not be long until you are scheduling more time for prayer. There must be a beginning, however. The beginning is making the appointment and keeping the appointment.

#2. ESTABLISH A PLACE TO MEET THE LORD. Jesus Himself taught closet praying: a set place, a shut place, a secluded place AS FREE FROM INTERRUPTIONS AS POSSIBLE. Use the place exclusively or prayer on a regular basis and psychological set will work for you. An attitude of readiness will invade you when you are in your prayer closet. As you go to your place of prayer, your mind will more readily affirm God’s presence with you. READ YOUR BIBLE FIRST. Read until you have a message from the written Word stirred up by the Holy Spirit

Consider your ways

READ GENESIS 27-31. TIME TO REFOCUS ON ANCHORS FROM THE WORD. ISAIAH 1:3: “My people do not consider.” HAGGAI 1:5: “Thus says the Lord of hosts, Consider your ways.” Hebrews 3:1: “Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, CONSIDER the Apostle and High priest of our confession. Christ Jesus.” If you don’t feel as close to God as you used to feel, don’t be mistaken as to who moved. Let the Word of God be a mirror to see yourself as God sees you. “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face.” In Him alone we can find comfort, peace, hope, wisdom, strength and eternal life.

Consider the Preciousness of Jesus - Part 4

1/14/2024

READ GENESIS 25-26. “CONSIDER THE PRECIOUSNESS OF JESUS—Part Four.” Jesus is precious as Savior. He not only saves us from our sin, but shares his life with us. Should this not make Him inexpressibly precious to us? It is when we are in deepest need that we most appreciate His preciousness. He is present and complement to our every need. Charles H. Spurgeon enshrined this truth in a hymn:
What the hand is to the lute,
What the breath is to the flute,
What is fragrance to the smell,
What the spring is to the well,
What the flower is to the bee,
That is Jesus Christ to me.
What the mother to the child,
What the guide to the pathless wild,
What is oil to troubled wave,
What is ransom to the slave,
What is water to the sea,
That is Jesus Christ to me.

Dr J. Gordon Henry - the Founder of The Prayer Seminar shares thoughts for consideration

    Note from the Author

    My Blog
Many of our readers have walked along beside us through articles in The Reflector. It has been a joy to share. After sixty-nine years of publication, the last issue of that publication was December 2023. Due to increased responsibilities as caregiver for Sue, my wife, who has ministered close by my side for over sixty-six years, a decision has been made to use the world-wide web as the tool and mode to continue sharing. The platform will be www.theprayerseminar.com. Entries will be made as time and events allow. Check out My Blog on the JGHM website, www,jgordonhenryministries.org and find past vignettes (word pictures) of my thoughts and actions as we carried out the mission God entrusted to us in 1984. Indeed these have been exciting times. Reflectors from 2006-2023 are available on the website.
